A little bit of history…
The original design for Redbridge would have utilised large quantities of glass in a way not previously seen in Holden’s stations. The ticket hall was to be almost totally translucent, with a glass ventilation tower incorporating an etching from the 1937 Paris Exposition. The tower and rounded plan were kept for the final building, but the glass was replaced with cheaper brick and tile. The exterior features railings with design motifs of roundels and ‘LT’ symbols, as well as a totem signpost. The ticket hall has a circular ceiling design, with 12 concrete spokes radiating out from the centre. The platforms are finished with Poole Pottery tiling in cream, blue and black, and feature two original platform clocks with roundels in place of the numbers.
During the war, along with Wanstead and Gants Hill, the unfinished station platforms were used as air-raid shelters. From 1942 to 1945, in the tunnels between the stations, Plessey Electronics manufactured munitions. The station was finally opened on 14 December 1947.
