A little bit of history…
Designed by Charles Holden, construction of Wanstead station began in the mid-1930s, but was delayed by the onset of World War II. The original intended design featured a glass brick ventilation tower and a carving of St George & his Dragon but after the war it was altered to utilise less expensive prefabricated concrete panels finished in grey render and black tile around the entrance.
During the war, along with Redbridge and Gants Hill, the unfinished station platforms were used as air-raid shelters. From 1942 to 1945, in the tunnels between the stations, Plessey Electronics manufactured munitions. The station was finally opened on 14 December 1947.
