A little history about this station…
East Finchley Station opened in July 1939. The original station design by Leonard Bucknell & Ruth Ellis was revised by Charles Holden. Like many of Holdens designs, it was inspired by European architecture that he had seen on trips to the continent during that decade & echoed the Art Deco influence of Streamline Moderne.
One of the most prominent features at East Finchley station is The Archer, a 3 meter tall statue by Eric Aumonier. Designed to commemorate Finchley’s ancient association with hunting in the nearby Royal Forest of Enfield. This powerful figure, aiming its arrow in the direction of London, symbolizes the rapid transit of modern electric trains.
Within the station the distinctive semi-circular glazed stairways lead to the enclosed bridge over the tracks & staff offices. East Finchley Station was the terminus of the Northern Line so it was a large undertaking, designed to form a turnaround point and thus needing canteen and train crew facilities.
I love the curves, I love the straight lines & I obviously love The Archer!
